Despite an avalanche of advice and public outcry requesting they not follow through with their threat to do so, the Merseyside Police have in fact initiated a 7-day dog ‘amnesty,’ asking that dog owners surrender their pets to the authorities for destruction if they feel the animals may be dangerous or illegal. I remain vehemently opposed to such an ineffective undertaking, and am concerned for the safety and well-being of both the general public as well as responsible owners and their dogs. |

It is with great dismay that Doglost announces one of the first victims of the "Liverpool Amnesty" is Cassie, a beautiful Irish blue staffy who Doglost helped reunite with her owner 18 months ago, when she had been stolen from their home. 1,000's of Doglost helpers are shocked amd appalled by the series of events and mis-information that led to this sad outcome.
We whole heartedly back Deed Not Breed in their mission to stop the scare mongering, face the facts and present dog owners with sensible correct advice. Read Cassie's Story... |

I qualified 8 years ago and have worked as a small animal vet ever since. I have dealt with numerous breeds of dogs with many varying problems. Staffies are delightful creatures, incredibly loyal and loving to their owners and very protective of owners and children. Interestingly, in my experience I have seen more unpredictable and potentially "dangerous" golden retrievers [usually in the hands of inexperienced owners] than any other breed of dog. |

'You may not agree with the hand in but I am sure all parents will want to prioritise the safety of their children above the affection for their dogs.' - Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe, Merseyside Police 'They have gone ahead without listening and unfortunately their amnesty will leave the public unprotected while only responsible owners and their dogs will suffer.' - Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary '…Two things are certain: Dogs will die. Dogs will die. And the public will still be unprotected from attacks by genuinely dangerous dogs as ever they were.' - Nick Mays. Chief Reporter, OUR DOGS |

Deed Not Breed by Debbie Connolly (Dog Borstal) |

This statement represents the personal feelings of Debbie Connolly and in no way represents the feelings of the BBC As someone who specialises in treatment of aggression problems in dogs I have strong feelings about the human role in the cause. The Dangerous Dogs Act has proven that legislation against specific breeds is pointless as long legal battles to prove the breed type of a dog are putting off any action being taken at all. The difficulty in identifying specific breeds would be the same no matter what breed was on the list. It also seems to confuse even the Police who have occasionally told someone complaining about a local dog that they couldn’t act because it wasn’t a Pit Bull. |

Any form of aggression displayed by a dog must be taken seriously and when such aggression leads to the disfiguration or death of a child then we must all question how and why. Targeting and banning certain breeds is not the answer as when one breed disappears there will be another to take its place. Fighting breeds do not have to fight and they do not have to be aggressive but when a sad and cruel element of our society takes these breeds and trains them specifically for fighting they will become aggressive. |

The current Breed Specific Legislation is unfair, with the animal paying the ultimate price for having a fool at the end of its lead, dogs don’t ask to be born nor do they get to select a responsible owner, many dogs live their live being passed from pillar to post before if they are lucky ending up in rescue, if not dead in the pound. |
