Deed Not Breed Ltd was originally set up as a campaign group following the announcement of a Dangerous (illegal) Dogs Amnesty run by Merseyside Police in 2007 when people were being asked to hand over their pet dogs for destruction because of the way they looked and not for anything they had done. Mercifully this was the only such amnesty and our role became one of offering free advice and assistance to owners of dogs of all breeds who have fallen foul of Dangerous Dogs Act legislation be that liaising with the authorities on their behalf, or putting them in touch with specialist legal advisors and representation.
As time has moved on, we have found ourselves contacted by owners of dogs of all breeds for advice, not just on the Dangerous Dogs Act and Breed Specific Legislation, but also the more basic principles of responsible dog ownership such as microchipping, ownership disputes, and behaviour.
The organisation is run by me, Andrea Phillips. I took over as director of Deed Not Breed in September 2016 but was involved behind the scenes before that time. As well as Deed Not Breed, I volunteered at my local RSPCA branch for 6 years, am the Volunteer Manager/Foster Manager and Trustee for Senior Staffy Club , Chair/Secretary/Trustee for Sprocker Assist & Rescue, trustee for Wags and Bones Staffie Rescue Support and co-founder of Willow the Wobbly Staffie, set up to raise awareness of L2-HGA in Staffordshire Bull Terriers. I am also a member of KAD (Kids Around Dogs). You can see, dogs are an important part of my life
Over the years we have provided support and advice to several thousand owners as well as to many other organisations. We were consulted on the current Association of Chief Police Officers guidance on dangerous dogs and provided the Returned Dogs information sheet contained within the guidance. We regularly attend dangerous dog law seminars and have given presentations at industry seminars. We have built up a strong network of contacts within other organisations which we are very proud of including Police forces, Local Authorities, Type and Behaviour Experts, Barristers, Solicitors, Animal Rescue charities, Boarding establishments, Lost and Found indexes and Veterinarians.
Our telephone lines are open 24/7 however we ask that non-urgent calls be restricted to office hours. If credit is an issue, we are happy to call back and if we do not answer straight away, please leave a message. We could be dealing with other owners and will get back to you as soon as we possibly can. (We will not call back if you do not leave a message due to the high number of ‘accident claim calls’ we have been receiving).
If you have had a dog seized, are facing prosecution or civil action or simply want advice on a dog-related matter, then please contact us for FREE, IMPARTIAL, CONFIDENTIAL and UP TO DATE advice. We do not discuss individual cases nor do we get involved with campaigns for individual dogs. We will never pressure you, judge you or betray your confidence.
In the unlikely event we are unable to help you, we will put you in touch with organisations who can and will also put you in touch with qualified canine law specialist solicitors if your case requires this
We also offer advice and assistance to solicitors, local authority dog wardens and police forces across the UK
Deed Not Breed promotes responsible dog ownership and is opposed to Breed Specific Legislation on the grounds that no breed of dog is inherently more dangerous than any other.
Deed Not Breed is a private company limited by guarantee. Registered in England and Wales. Company number 06325487
